Nouns

What is a Noun?

A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.

Examples

  • Person: teacher, doctor, Riya
  • Place: school, Delhi, park
  • Animal: dog, lion, elephant
  • Thing: book, pencil, chair
  • Idea: honesty, love, happiness

Remember: A noun tells us who or what we are talking about.

Examples in Sentences

  • Rohan is reading a book.
  • The cat is sleeping on the sofa.
  • We visited the museum.
  • Kindness is a good quality.

How to Find a Noun

Ask these questions:

  • Who?
  • What?
  • Which place?

Example "The girl is flying a kite."

Who? → girl (noun)

What? → kite (noun)

1. Proper Noun

A Proper Noun is the special name of a particular person, place, or thing.

It always begins with a capital letter.

3. Collective Noun

A Collective Noun is the name of a group of people, animals, or things.

4. Material Noun

A Material Noun names the material from which things are made.

5. Abstract Noun

An Abstract Noun is the name of a feeling, quality, state, or idea that cannot be seen or touched.

  • happiness

  • Bravery is admired by everyone.
