English Grammar : Phrasal Verbs

What are Phrasal Verbs?

Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb + preposition or verb + adverb (sometimes both) that create a new meaning different from the original verb.

Example:
Look = देखना
Look after = देखभाल करना

Phrasal verbs are very common in spoken and written English.

Types of Phrasal Verbs

  1. Intransitive Phrasal Verbs (No object needed)

    • The plane took off.
      (Plane = subject; no object)
  2. Transitive Phrasal Verbs (Object needed)

    • She turned off the light.
      (Light = object)
  3. Separable Phrasal Verbs

    • She turned off the light.
    • She turned the light off.
  4. Inseparable Phrasal Verbs

    • She looks after her sister.
      (Cannot say: looks her sister after ❌)

Common Phrasal Verbs with Meanings & Sentences

  1. Bring up – Mention / Raise
    She brought up an important topic.
    उसने एक महत्वपूर्ण विषय उठाया।

  2. Call off – Cancel
    They called off the meeting.
    उन्होंने बैठक रद्द कर दी।

  3. Carry on – Continue
    Please carry on your work.
    कृपया अपना काम जारी रखें।

  4. Come across – Find by chance
    I came across an old photo.
    मुझे एक पुरानी फोटो मिल गई।

  5. Come in – Enter
    Please come in.
    कृपया अंदर आइए।

  6. Find out – Discover
    I found out the truth.
    मैंने सच्चाई पता लगा ली।

  7. Get up – Wake and rise
    I get up at 6 a.m.
    मैं सुबह 6 बजे उठता हूँ।

  8. Give up – Quit
    He gave up smoking.
    उसने धूम्रपान छोड़ दिया।

  9. Go on – Continue
    The show must go on.
    कार्यक्रम जारी रहना चाहिए।

  10. Go out – Leave home
    She went out with her friends.
    वह अपने दोस्तों के साथ बाहर गई।

  11. Look after – Take care of
    She looks after her baby.
    वह अपने बच्चे की देखभाल करती है।

  12. Look for – Search
    I am looking for my keys.
    मैं अपनी चाबियाँ ढूंढ रहा हूँ।

  13. Look into – Investigate
    The police will look into the case.
    पुलिस मामले की जांच करेगी।

  14. Make up – Invent / Reconcile
    She made up a story.
    उसने एक कहानी बना ली।

  15. Pick up – Lift / Collect
    I picked up the book.
    मैंने किताब उठा ली।

  16. Put off – Postpone
    They put off the match.
    उन्होंने मैच स्थगित कर दिया।

  17. Put on – Wear
    She put on her jacket.
    उसने अपनी जैकेट पहन ली।

  18. Run into – Meet unexpectedly
    I ran into my teacher.
    मैं अपने शिक्षक से अचानक मिला।

  19. Run out of – Exhaust supply
    We ran out of milk.
    हमारा दूध खत्म हो गया।

  20. Set up – Arrange / Establish
    They set up a new company.
    उन्होंने एक नई कंपनी स्थापित की।

  21. Take off – Remove / Depart
    The plane took off.
    विमान उड़ान भर गया।

  22. Take care – Be careful
    Take care of yourself.
    अपना ध्यान रखो।

  23. Turn on – Switch on
    Please turn on the fan.
    कृपया पंखा चालू करें।

  24. Turn off – Switch off
    Turn off the lights.
    लाइट बंद करो।

  25. Wake up – Stop sleeping
    I wake up early.
    मैं जल्दी जागता हूँ।

  26. Work out – Exercise / Solve
    She works out daily.
    वह रोज़ व्यायाम करती है।

  27. Break down – Stop working
    My car broke down.
    मेरी गाड़ी खराब हो गई।

  28. Break up – End relationship
    They broke up last year.
    उनका पिछले साल ब्रेकअप हो गया।

  29. Bring back – Return
    Please bring back my book.
    कृपया मेरी किताब वापस लाओ।

  30. Check out – Examine / Leave hotel
    We checked out of the hotel.
    हमने होटल से चेक-आउट किया।
