Class8 Science Book Curiosity Chapter6 QA

Chapter 6 – Pressure, Winds, Storms and Cyclones

VERY SHORT ANSWER (1 MARK) – IMPORTANT

  1. What is pressure?
Pressure is the force acting per unit area.

  2. What is air pressure?
The pressure exerted by air on objects.

  3. What causes wind?
    Difference in air pressure.

  4. What is a storm?
A violent disturbance in the atmosphere.

  5. What is a cyclone?
A rapidly rotating storm with very high wind speed.

  6. Name the instrument used to measure air pressure.
    Barometer.

  7. Which areas have low air pressure?
    Warm air regions.

SHORT ANSWER (2 MARKS) – IMPORTANT

  1. Define pressure with formula.
Pressure is force acting per unit area.
    Pressure = Force ÷ Area

  2. Why does air exert pressure?
Because air has mass and is in constant motion.

  3. How does temperature affect air pressure?
Warm air rises and creates low pressure, cold air sinks and creates high pressure.

  4. Why do winds blow from one place to another?
Winds blow from high-pressure areas to low-pressure areas.

  5. What is the eye of a cyclone?
The calm central region of a cyclone.

  6. State two effects of cyclones.

    • Heavy rainfall
    • Strong winds causing damage

LONG ANSWER (5 MARKS) – IMPORTANT

1. Explain pressure. State factors affecting pressure.

Pressure is the force acting per unit area.
Pressure depends on the force applied and the area over which it acts.
Smaller area produces greater pressure.

2. Explain how winds are formed.

Due to heating of air, warm air rises creating low pressure.
Cold air from high-pressure areas moves towards low-pressure areas.
This movement of air is called wind.

3. What is a cyclone? How is it formed?

A cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm with very high wind speed.
It forms over warm ocean water due to low pressure and rising warm air.
Air rushes towards the low-pressure centre and starts rotating.

4. Describe the structure of a cyclone.

A cyclone has three parts:

  • Eye – calm centre
  • Eye wall – strongest winds
  • Rain bands – spiral clouds causing rainfall

5. Safety measures during a cyclone.

  • Stay indoors
  • Switch off electricity
  • Keep emergency kit ready
  • Follow weather warnings
