What is Percentage?

The word percentage means “per hundred”.
It is used to compare quantities by converting them into fractions of 100.

The symbol for percentage is %.

👉 Example:
50% means 50 out of 100 or 50/100.


Important Points to Remember

  • Percentage always has 100 as the denominator
  • To convert a fraction into percentage → multiply by 100
  • To convert a percentage into fraction → divide by 100
  • Percentages are widely used in marks, discounts, profit & loss, population, and statistics.

Question 1

Find the percentage of 25 out of 100.

Solution:

25/100 x 100 =1/4 x 100 = 100/4 = 25

Answer: 25%


Question 2

Find the percentage of 20 out of 50.

Solution:

20/50 x 100 = 2/5 x 100 = 200/5 = 40

Answer: 40%


Question 3

A student scored 45 marks out of 60. Find the percentage.

Solution:

45/60 x 100 = 3/4 x 100 = 300/4 = 75

Answer: 75%


Question 4

Convert 3/5 into percentage.

Solution:

3/5 x 100 = 300/5 = 60

Answer: 60%


Question 5

Convert 0.25 into percentage.

Solution:

25/100 x 100 = 2500/100 = 25

Answer: 25%


Question 6

What is 10% of 200?

Solution:

10/100 x 200 = 1/10 x 200 = 200/10 = 20

Answer: 20


Question 7

Find 25% of 80.

Solution:

25/100 x 80 = 1/4 x 80 = 80/4 = 20

Answer: 20


Question 8

If the total number of students is 40 and 30 are present, find the percentage of students present.

Solution:

30/40 100 = 3/4 x 100 = 300/4 = 75

Answer: 75%


Question 9

A shirt costs ₹500. If the discount is 20%, find the discount amount.

Solution:

20/100 x 500 = 1/5 x 500 = 500/5 = 100

Answer: Discount = ₹100


Question 10

Out of 200 fruits, 50 are spoiled. Find the percentage of spoiled fruits.

Solution:

50/200 x 100 = 1/4 x 100 = 100/4 = 25

Answer: 25%
