ENGLISH GRAMMAR DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH (NARRATION) Introduction Direct Speech means using the exact words of the speaker inside quotation marks. Example: Ram said, “I am busy.” Indirect Speech means reporting the speaker’s words without quotation marks. Example: Ram said that he was busy. Rule 1. Reporting Verbs The words used to introduce speech are called reporting verbs. said is used without an object. told is used with an object. asked is used for questions. ordered, requested, advised, suggested are used for commands, requests and advice. Rule 2. Changes in Pronouns First person pronouns change according to the subject. Second person pronouns change according to the object. Third person pronouns do not change. Example Direct: He said to me, “You are kind.” Indirect: He told me that I was kind. Rule 3. What Is Punctuation? Punctuation refers to the symbols we use in writing to organize sentences and make meaning clear. They show pauses, stops, emotions, or relationships between ideas. Main Punctuation Marks and Examples 1. Full Stop (.) Used at the end of a complete sentence. Example 1: I went to the market. Example 2: She loves reading books. 2. Comma (, ) Used to show a small pause, separate items in a list, or clauses in a sentence. Example 3: I bought apples, bananas, and oranges. Example 4: After the meeting, we went for lunch. 3. Question Mark (?) Used at the end of a direct question. Example 5: Where are you going? Example 6: Did you finish your homework? 4. Exclamation Mark (!) Used to show strong feelings or surprise. Will – used for future actions or decisions Meaning: करेगा / होगी (भविष्य काल) Examples: I will go to school tomorrow.  → मैं कल स्कूल जाऊँगा । She will help you.  → वह तुम्हारी मदद करेगी । They will play football in the evening.  → वे शाम को फुटबॉल खेलेंगे । 🔹 2.
